* Download: HostsXpert
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert
Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore MS Hosts file' and click OK.

This will restore your default hosts file again because it looks like it's corrupted.

For the error you get.
Try Winsockfix:
*Download WinsockFix
Place it on your desktop.
Start Winsockfix.exe and click "Reg backup"
Your current registry will be saved in the folder "ERDNT"
Then click FIX
Your system will reboot.

Also, you will need to restore your proxysettings.
Check and fix the following entry in HijackThis:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

then, open Internet Explorer, In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.


By the way, are you using a legal version of XP?

This will restore your default hosts file again because it looks like it's corrupted.

For the error you get.
Try Winsockfix:

Place it on your desktop.
Start Winsockfix.exe and click "Reg backup"
Your current registry will be saved in the folder "ERDNT"

Your system will reboot.

Also, you will need to restore your proxysettings.
Check and fix the following entry in HijackThis:

then, open Internet Explorer, In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.


By the way, are you using a legal version of XP?

Kept getting ERROR SAVING FILES messages when doing the back up for Winsockfix..

Instead of Winsockfix, do next instead:

Go to start > run and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

Reboot.

The system reboots and there it is AGAIN..

The TCP/IP network trasport is not installed

Also Firefwall will not activate nor can I turn on my Avira anti-virus.

I try to go into settings and turn on services and it won't do it??

I am so exhausted, been up all night and I am ready to cry! This is just horrible.

I even tried grabbing the WinSock and WinSock2 reg files from an exact copy of my Windows XP from my Dell XPS and replace it and that didn't work?? I been trying ever google fix I could find and nothing...

I have system restored about 8 different dates so far and now I am going to go back to today at 6:30pm. This all happened when my computer got hung up on a website and I rebooted and then it has been nothing but hell since 2:00 am over here local time (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) I am going to try to get some sleep then wake up and go over that link you sent me. I don't know what else to do. NOTHING I DO prevents that error from popping up, Firewall to turn on, Internet services to turn on, Avira to turn on... Nothing! Again, I thank you so much for helping me through this! Talk to you in a few hours after I get some rest!

Please start with posting a new HijackThis log, so I have an idea where we stand now.

ok, so i know where to start and what steps to perform again.
We'll also have a doublecheck first if there's still malware present or not before we fix anything..
Because if you did system restore in between, it could have restored some malware that was already deleted again

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Method 2: Use the Msinfo32 program
Note Use this method only if you do not have a Windows XP Setup CD and you do not have Support Tools installed.
Click Start, click Run, type Msinfo32, and then click OK.
Expand Components, expand Network, and then click Protocol.
You will have ten sections under Protocol. The section headings will include the following names if the Winsock2 key is undamaged:
MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
RSVP UDP Service Provider
RSVP TCP Service Provider
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
If the names are anything different from those in this list, the Winsock2 key is corrupted, or you have a third-party add-on, such as proxy software, installed.
If you have a third-party add-on installed, the name of the add-on will replace the letters "MSAFD" in the list.

If there are more than ten sections in the list, you have third-party additions installed.

If there are fewer than ten sections, there is information missing.

Note These entries represent an installation with only the TCP/IP protocol installed. You can have a working Winsock and see additional entries if another protocol is installed. For example, if you install NWLink IPX/SPX, you will see 7 additional sections, for a total of 17. Below is an example heading of one of the new sections:
MSAFD nwlnkipx [IPX]
Also, each of the new sections that are created by installing NWLink IPX/SPX start with "MSAFD." Therefore, there are still only two sections that do not start with those letters.

If the Netdiag test fails, or if you determined that there is Winsock corruption by looking at Msinfo32, you must repair the Winsock2 key by using the steps in the next section.
