RE: NOD32 threat: win32/olmarik trojan-unable to clean
Hi,

I have moved your thread to the correct part of this forum.

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

RE: NOD32 threat: win32/olmarik trojan-unable to clean
Hello,

Thanks for your fast reply. I installed Malwarebytes successfully but it seems that the software will not run. I can open the help file, but not the software to perform a scan. I even tried to temporarily disable my ESET NOD32 software and run MBAM software but nothing happened; just the hourglass appears briefly and then disappears.

I have emailed the software team for support and I am awaiting their reply. In the meantime I tried to do a system restore to a date last week when I was virus-free but although the system restore worked the virus is still there.

Any ideas what me next step is?

Cheers,
Deepa

RE: NOD32 threat: win32/olmarik trojan-unable to clean
Hi,

The MBAM support advised I run RKILL.exe then MBAM. I tried that a few times even in safe mode but still couldn't get MBAM to run.

So I got desperate and so I went onto the ESET NOD32 support site http://www.eset.com/us/support/contact#business

and used their self-service to describe problem and they pointed me to a link to clean the malware:
http://download.eset.com/special/EOlmarikRemover.exe

I used the remover and the virus seems to be gone. I have to run a few more checks to see if everything is functioning well.

Thanks again for your time and help.

Cheers,
Deepa

Hi,

Since I work for Malwarebytes, it wasn't really needed to contact support team as I can help you with this as well Icon_smile

Please open the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Antimalware folder and rename mbam.exe to firefox.com
Then doublecllick the renamed firefox.com and see if it will scan.

If not, please try again from Windows safe mode.

Edit, I see you just posted in between. If the "virus" is gone, then you should be able to run Malwarebytes again though, so please try once again with Malwarebytes, because I am sure your DNS settings are still compromised.

RE: NOD32 threat: win32/olmarik trojan-unable to clean
Yes I was able to run MBAM after the trojan was removed. As you suspected there were still 3 infected files, so I cleaned those up too.

My system is now back to normal, my web browsing is also no longer doing anything strange, and my files all seem to be working fine.

It seems the ESET Realtime protection was unable to prevent me from going to a known malicious site, and preventing the Olmarik Trojan file from executing. Thanks for pointing me to MBAM.

Anyways case is closed. Thanks for all your help.

Glad I could help. Icon_smile

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
