RE: wdmaud virus
Hi,

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

Avira, AVG OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Reboot your computer afterwards.
After reboot, perform a full scan with your Antivirus and let it remove anything it is finding. Then reboot once again in order to delete files that were in use previously.

Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply - then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense that you expect Malware related problems while you have not even an Antivirus installed.

Also, please let me know what eXACT problems you are dealing with, because you are talking about the "wmaud" virus while this one is already dead for at least 3 years.

RE: wdmaud virus
Thank you for your help. I have installed Malwarebytes anti-malware program as well as Ad-aware. I don't think (& hope) these two don't work against each other. I performed the Malwarebytes scan several times and run Ad-ware several times in an effort to stop the hi-jacking of IE. But I seem to get hijacked when I run a google search and try to click on some of the resulting links. If I type the url in directly there is no problem. But clicking on the results of a google search sends me to random sites. Searching for solutions on the net lead me to believe it was the wdmaud virus and I did find the wdmaud file in my system32 file.

So now I ran my antivirus and rebooted. I ran HJT and here is the resulting log:

RE: wdmaud virus
Hi,

Malwarebytes & adaware is no Antivirus. You need an Antivirus with realtime protection, so I suggest you install Avira first.

Edit, I see you have MSE instelled; so that's OK here.

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix...e-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

RE: wdmaud virus
Hi,

Have you been deleting the legitimate wdmaud.drv previously? Because I see you in your log this one got recently created again. That's the legitimate one, btw.
The so called virus you are mentioning is already dead for a few years already.

Are you still getting redirected? Because I can't see anything strange/suspicious in your log though.

In either way, please do the following as well..

Please Download
TDSSKiller.zip

[color="#8B0000"]>>>[/color] Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.
  • Click on the Start Scan button and wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue [Afbeelding: tdsskiller2.png]
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue [Afbeelding: tdsskiller3.png]
  • If you are asked to reboot the computer to complete the process, click on the Reboot Now button. A report will be automatically saved at the root of the System drive ((usually C:\) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt" (for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file will appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

RE: wdmaud virus
Hi,

My early attempts at getting rid of the hijacking problem were to try and delete the offending file. I thought I was killing the correct one (23kb file found in windows/system32). Apparently, I was misled? Easy to see I'm a newbie at all this...(killing the wrong file, trouble posting replies, trouble posting smiley faces....) How do you do that?

I have not dared to do a google search since we started this process. So I am unable to tell you if I'm still getting redirected. I have now run TDSSKiller and no reboot was necessary. I will try a google search after I send this to you.

RE: wdmaud virus
Hi,

Well, the problem is, you deleted a legitimate file. wdmaud.drv (23kb) is legitimate and no malware. Luckily Windows file protection has replaced it again.

I really can't see anything strange/suspicious here though. Are you still having the redirect problem? So, when you click a google result, what sites do you get redirected for example? Is this for every result?
The main reason I am asking this is because some sites do have a redirect, so it's important here to know if this only happens for a certain site, or all google results and other search results in general.

RE: wdmaud virus
Tried several google searches and everything seems to be normal. Hope the previous TDSSKiller scan confirms this.

Thank you,

Jim

RE: wdmaud virus
I was getting directed to various websites selling junk. I generally wasn't redirected to the same site twice in a row. One pop up was a Walmart survey (very annoying). Sometimes redirected after not changing anything, just sitting on a particular site...then "boom" ....off to somewhere else. I could see in the IE tab "redirecting to......". But as I said, things seem to have quieted down. Maybe ComboFix took care of it?

Yes, or one of the other scanners you ran previously. Good to hear you don't have this issue anymore. Icon_smile

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
